When a kitchen studio in Asheville needed rift-sawn red oak with consistent ray fleck and sub-8% moisture content, they sent us a spec sheet. We sent them back the tree. Here's what happened between those two moments.
Standing Timber
Red oak marked with blue paint in a managed Appalachian stand, 28" DBH, selected for straight grain and tight annual rings.
Headrig Cut
The log is rotated 45° on the carriage for a rift-sawn pattern — medullary rays running perpendicular to the face for dimensional stability.
Kiln Schedule
Stickered at 1" spacing and dried over 18 days at 140°F, stepping down in 10° increments to prevent surface checking. Final MC: 7.1%.
Planer Pass & Grading
S2S to 13/16", graded to FAS, each board photographed for end-grain pattern. Knots, mineral streaks, and figure documented per NHLA standards.
Delivered & Installed
400 board feet shipped to Asheville Kitchen Studio on a padded flatbed. Installed as face-frame and door stock in a Shaker-style kitchen.

A Timber Frame Package, Engineered and Loaded in 12 Days.
General contractors ordering framing packages don't have time for surprises. When a Vermont builder needed a full post-and-beam set pre-cut and sequenced for a three-day raise, we pulled eastern white pine from standing inventory, ran it through the CNC shop, and had it on a flatbed before the concrete cured.

Engineering Package
A timber-frame builder in Vermont submitted a 3,200 sq ft barn house design. We produced a cutting list, timber schedule, and joinery drawings within five business days.

CNC Mortise & Tenon
Posts, beams, and rafters cut to length on a programmable headrig. Mortises and tenon shoulders milled on a CNC router to ±1/64" — no hand-fitting on site.
Flatbed Load & Strap
Full package — 47 sticks, 8,400 linear feet — banded, numbered, and loaded in assembly sequence. Arrived on site in one 53-foot flatbed, zero short-shipment.
Frame Raised
The Vermont crew raised the frame in three days. Pre-fitted joints dropped together without persuasion. The builder called it the cleanest package he'd worked from in twenty years.
